Welcome!

Hello,
I’m Noah and I’m just a radio nerd from Minnesota who loves all aspects of the broadcast industry. From the DJs to the music to the imaging/production, I love it all. So that’s why I’m creating a blog—To voice my thoughts/opinions on everything happening in the broadcast industry!

I hope you enjoy!

Pitching Up Your Music? Should You Do It?

Pitched up–The first thing most average human beings outside of the industry would probably think "pitched up" means that the audio will automatically sound like Alvin & The Chipmunks... But that of course isn't the case. In the broadcast industry, "pitching up" the audio is a slight pitch tweak up to help the music being broadcast sound a little bit "brighter", at least this is how I've understood it... But of course, every station does this differently, if they even pitch up audio at all. The unwritten rule when it comes to pitching seems to be only use 1 to 2 percent. 1 to 2 percent probably isn't noticeable to the average human, but it does give the audio a slightly "brighter" sound when you compare it to another station that doesn't use pitch. If I remember correctly, iHeart for example pitches there CHR & Country stations up 1.5%... Something I didn't notice until it was pointed out to me, and then after comparin...

The Breeze blows out of Philadelphia

iHeartMedia's 106.1 WISX-FM in Philadelphia has dropped its 3 year old Soft AC format and is now “Under Construction” and simulcasting CHR sister station WIOQ “Q102.” “The Breeze” launched in Philadelphia on November 12, 2018 during the Soft AC boom of 2018 replacing the year old Rhythmic AC format on WISX known as “Real 106.1.”  WISX had a 3.3 share in Nielsen Audio PPM Monthly Ratings, placing it in 10th place. WISX averaged a 3.45 share over the course of the last six months of ratings. Right above WISX in 9th place is Sports/Talk formatted WIP-FM/94.1; and right below WISX in 11th place is WIOQ, their CHR sister station they currently are simulcasting. Stations leading in the Philly ratings include, WXTU (Country; #4), WMGK (Classic Rock; #3), WDAS-FM (Adult R&B; #2) and taking the #1 spot is Rock formatted 93.3 WMMR.  My Thoughts:  A year or two ago, WISX had a 4.7 share, and the heritage AC station, WBEB “B101.1” had a 5.5 share. While ratings did slide for WISX...

MP3s: It’s 2022. Why are we still using lossy audio?

This subject is pretty controversial among the radio industry, and some people still believe that MP3 is better than LOSSLESS codecs like WAV, and FLAC. But let me tell you, it IS NOT… and here’s why. Back in the day, when computers were connected to internet via dial-up, and had tiny hard drives, the preferred and most widely known and supported codec was MP3… A lossy codec developed FOR CONSUMERS. Some radio stations that switched to PC based automation used a higher quality lossy codec, MP2, meant more for professionals at that time. At the time, these codecs were good enough for most stations because they took up the least of limited hard drive space, but the quality wasn’t there.  But some people didn’t settle for lossy during the early days of computers. I talked with a good friend who currently works at a station on the southside of Atlanta metro and had previously worked in Atlanta at a few different stations like Cox Media Group’s News/Talker WSB (750 AM) as a board op and...
